Layer 02 - The Characters Men In Black These two men dressed ominously in black stakeout Lain's house. She notices the taller one (Karl) on her walk to school one day, and then sees the black unmarked car in front of her house another morning with a red light following her, and then two the next day. Mika sees the men at the front door another day though they tell her to forget she saw them. Lain suspects they are the Knights and forces them away one day (broke the short mib's headset with some mental force). They lead her to the computer company and say the Knights are after her. SPOILERS It seems they are in some ways affiliated with the Knights, but it's the other way around. The Knights' God is Masami Eiri's wired spirit and this computer company is trying to end his reign. The MIB are watching Lain to see if she's developing the power she was born to have in which to stop Eiri. Karl seems to actually care for Lain and is looking out for her welfare though in episode 5 he blamed her for the recent blur of the Wired and Real world. The short guy was killed by some kind of overload with his headset that imprinted Lain's image in his eyes before he convulsed and died. But at the very end once Lain erased the memory of herself from everyone, the two MIB were handimen fixing a streetlight in their new lives. <<Return
